The Masquers bring razor-sharp drama 鈥楥lybourne Park鈥 to Armstrong Campus

The student theater group, the Masquers, present their main stage show of the year, 鈥淐lybourne Park,鈥 at Jenkins Hall Theatre on the Armstrong Campus of 秋葵视频.  The play will run March 5 through 7 at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, March 8 at 3 p.m. General admission tickets to the show cost $15. Seniors, children and military members can take advantage of a discount. Georgia Southern students, faculty and staff are admitted free with their Eagle ID.

The drama, centered around the politics of race, begins in 1959. It tells the story of a couple moving out to the suburbs after the tragic death of their son. Inadvertently, they sold the house they were leaving to the neighborhood鈥檚 first black family. Fifty years later a young white couple buys the home in what is now a predominantly black neighborhood, signaling a new wave of gentrification. In both instances, a community showdown takes place, pitting race against real estate with this home as the battleground.

鈥淎s a play it was written to make people uncomfortable, perhaps even angry about these very issues that still impact people鈥檚 lives every day,鈥 said director and professor, Elizabeth Desnoyers-Colas, Ph.D. 鈥淚 want people to think about how people fight to keep their respective communities intact, sometimes to the detriment of trying to keep others out that don鈥檛 look or sound like them.鈥
